The Submarine Voyage was a classic Tomorrowland attraction at Disneyland that operated from 1959 to 1998. Debuting as part of the park's massive 1959 expansion, which also introduced the Matterhorn Bobsleds and the Disneyland Monorail, it was one of the park's original "E-Ticket" adventures. The attraction was famous for giving guests the illusion of diving deep into the ocean inside a fleet of military-inspired submarines, taking them past coral reefs, through shipwrecks, and even into the presence of sea serpents and the ruins of Atlantis.

Despite its popularity as a quintessential Disney experience, the attraction faced significant operational hurdles. By the late 1990s, the Submarine Voyage had become incredibly expensive to maintain due to the aging fleet and the complexities of underwater animatronics. Furthermore, its low hourly capacity resulted in consistently long lines that were difficult to manage during peak park hours. These factors ultimately led to its closure in September 1998, leaving the iconic Tomorrowland lagoon empty and dormant for nearly a decade.
